Basketball Courts

Speaking of churches, did you know that every church of the Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) has a basketball court in it?

(Don't confuse the church with the big bad-ass temples - the church is a small local meeting place that is shared by several "wards". A ward is a geographical grouping of followers that more-or-less run themselves with a mostly lay administration.)

How cool is that? How often are they used? Do they use it as a recruiting tool?

Enquiring minds want to know.

p.s. Did you know that the Matterhorn at Disneyland has a small half-court basketball court in it? Huh, did ya? (Visit the link for some happy music.)

  1. I did confirm that all LDS churches do have gyms. Not really for recruitment, but according to my friend, in the old days a lot of the communities didn't have any athletic facilities. They just kept doing it. All churches have roughly the same configuration, but try to use local materials.

The churches chapels only hold 300-350 people. So when you do something big, the gym is connected physically to the chapel, and you open it up and can hold 2,000 people.

  2. plus there are a lot of mighty fine players of basketball in the church. Seems like someone is playing in the gym up to 3 or 4 times a week. The competition is rather fierce sometimes. Good basketball for the most part. Ive been playing in or at the church for a long time. Like Jack said most of the churches are designed the same, obviously with some variances in places.
